Barcelona, January 2nd, 2019 – Schneider Electric, a forerunner of the digital transformation of energy management and automation, has been selected by Empresa de Electricidade da Madeira S.A. (EEM) to develop and implement innovative solutions for the electricity grid on the island of Porto Santo. The purpose of the Sustainable Porto Santo project, which is already underway, is to turn the island into the first fossil-fuel-free European territory with close to zero CO2 emissions, in a strategy that aims to guarantee the environmental sustainability of the island in the medium to long term future.
The determining factors for choosing Schneider Electric as a partner in this project, after an international tender, were their experience and international recognition, specifically with regards to their smart metering and smart grid solutions, the recognition of its comprehensive technical solutions, and a global structure enabling the project to be implemented in the scheduled time frame. These factors are in line with the expectations and needs presented by EEM:
Development of a smart electricity grid for the island of Porto Santo, providing it with greater visibility;
Customer service provision without the need for the technical crew or customer to be on-site;
Monthly invoicing based on the real value of energy consumed, eliminating estimated bills and on-site meter reading;
Improved grid operability, optimizing energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption;
Monitoring, logging, storing and processing all the electrical quantities and contingencies at the entry to customer facilities;
Increased penetration of renewables in the grid and in its management.
The commitment of EEM to Schneider Electric Smart Grid and Smart Metering solutions, implemented in collaboration with Construção e Manutenção Electromecânica, S.A., will provide Porto Santo with a smart solution for the grid, guaranteeing a high level of efficiency. This solution will be based on EcoStruxure Grid - Schneider Electric integrated architecture - which groups together the following aspects, among others:
Low and medium voltage sensors;
The innovative automated smart grids solution, Easergy T300;
Two data centers (one for telecommunications and another for processes);
Smart meters and the AMI/MDM system, which will be fully integrated with the current EEM corporate management systems.
This solution will enable the implementation of advanced monitoring, control, and automation functions, and will apply cutting-edge communication technology for local and remote operations. These factors will minimize interruptions to supply, optimize grid performance, and reduce operating costs on the island.
