Does Ethernet daisy-chaining of PM8000 or ION9000 meters affect the PTP time sync precision or accuracy of the meters?

Published date: 18 March 2019

Issue
Does Ethernet daisy-chaining (by way of the built in ethenet switch) of PM8000 or ION9000 meters affect the PTP time sync precision or accuracy of the meters?

Product Line
PowerLogic PM8000 Series and ION9000 series Power Meters

Environment
Time syncronization using Precision Time Protocol (PTP)

Cause
The PM8000 and ION9000 User Manuals state that a star network topology is required to achieve the level of clock precion specified.

Resolution
Meters directly connected to PTP transparent switches are required to guarantee PTP time sync performance. These switches can compensate for packet delay variation from external factors, such as the network architecture and network traffic volume and consistency. The onboard switches inside the PM8000 and ION9000 are not PTP transparent and can have an influence on the time sync performance of PTP enabled devices further down the Ethernet daisy-chain.
