What’s inside the Modicon M580?

The Modicon M580 CPU has “Spear 1380” microprocessor, which integrates all of the following inside a single silicon chip:

  1. A standard dual core high speed microprocessor to process both our customers’ applications on one core and the communications, in parallel, on the second core. This architecture - separating applications and communications on different cores - allow us to minimize the M580’s application scan time jitter, even in the case of huge communications.
  2. A processing unit dedicated for Ethernet communication with a 1Gbps interface
  3. A processing unit dedicated for our legacy backplane protocol (BusX)
  4. A processing unit dedicated for functional safety to compute the same application as the main core but with a different processing core and compiler
