How to use an ION meter's analog output module (0-20mA or 4-20mA) to represent power factor?

Goals and Symptoms

A customer may want to use the Analog Output Module of the ION meters to represent the power factor and feed the information to another device/system. However, the power factor ranges from -1 to 1 which doesn't map over to the Analog Output module. The Analog Output Module will only take a zero Source input value for its zero scale, one needs to find a way to put the power factor into a range starting with 0.

Causes and Fixes


Since power factor is a cos function of angle, one can use the Arithmetic module's "arccos" function to transform PF (1 to -1) to radius (0 to 3.141593). Then map the radius value to the 0-20mA or 4-20 mA input.
