is the number of households at the bottom of the pyramid connected to electricity thanks to Schneider Electric's integrated solutions in 2008 in six countries (India, South Africa, Sudan, Nigeria, Indonesia and Zambia).

The populations at the bottom of the pyramid live on a purchasing power parity of less than 3000$ per year. Schneider Electric offers the appropriate solutions for these populations. For example, its South-African subsidiary Conlog markets prepayment systems (meters, vending stations, etc.), which:

  • simplify connection to electrical networks,
  • make it easier to extend electrical networks,
  • allow populations to manage their consumption according to their needs and their income.

1.6 billion people worldwide have no access to electricity. Earth Summits have unanimously recognised that such access is essential to development. Almost 500 million people have no access to electricity in India and 550 million in Sub-Saharan Africa (source: IAE, 2007).

As it is aware of the impact of its products on society, Schneider Electric wants to be a major player in two areas where its environmental and social impact is particularly strong: access to electricity and energy efficiency.
