What is the preferred method of adding meters with ECC cards to Power Monitoring Expert?

Issue:
Power Monitoring Expert supports adding PM800, CM3000 and CM4000 meters with ECC cards in one of two ways. As a direct Ethernet device, and as a Serial Device on an Ethernet Gateway. A customer would like to know which is the preferred method of adding these devices.

Product Line:
ION Enterprise 6.0
StruxureWare Power Monitoring 7.0.x
Power Monitoring Expert 7.2.x

Environment:
Management Console

Cause:
Power Monitoring Expert supports adding PM800, CM3000 and CM4000 meters with ECC cards in one of two ways. As a direct Ethernet device, and as a Serial Device on an Ethernet Gateway. A customer would like to know which is the preferred method of adding these devices.

Resolution:
There is no preferred method for adding these meters to Power Monitoring Expert. Either method will work.

If the ECC has additional devices connected to it, the ECC will need to be added as a Gateway site in order to communicate to those devices, and therefore the preferred method would be to add the connected meter as a Serial Device on Ethernet Gateway as well. This will reduce the number of connections from PME to the ECC card.

Note: When adding a PM800, CM3000 or CM4000 device as a Direct Ethernet device, the COM1 Unit ID MUST be set to the default value of 1. The PME device driver assumes this value to be 1 which is why it is able to be added as a Direct Ethernet device. If this value has been changed (and cannot be changed back), the ECC will need to be added as a Site, and the meter as a Serial Device on Ethernet Gateway.
