GOALS AND SYMPTOMS

To publish a procedure for Users to configure modsoft to connect over Ethernet on a Windows 9x computer.

CAUSES AND FIXES

Windows 95 Quick Installation ( use the same steps for Windows 98)
This installation assumes that Windows95 is installed on the c:\windows directory and that Modsoft 2.51, or later, is installed in the c:\modsoft directory. If this is not the case, you will need to alter the drive letter and path names to match your installation.

1
  • Using the text editor of your choice, open the file named "c:\modsoft\vsl\vsldos.ini"
2
  • On line 9 (line 10 for Modsoft 2.62), edit the transport= line to read transport=winsock
3
  • On line 196 (line 201 for Modsoft 2.62), edit the netmodule= line to read netmodule=JSBW95WS(NOTE: the JSPW95WS does have to be in upper case)
4
  • Save c:\modsoft\vsl\vsldos.ini

1
  • Using the text editor of your choice, open the file named "c:\autoexec.bat"
2
  • Add a line which reads set vsl=c:\modsoft\vsl
3
  • Save c:\autoexec.bat

1
  • Using the text editor of your choice, open the file named "c:\windows\hosts". (Note that the hosts file does not have a file extension. If the hosts file does not exist, copy the hosts.sam file to hosts and then open hosts)
2
  • If a line with your IP address does not already exist, add one that reads: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX YYYYYYY localhost. Where XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX is your IP address and YYYYYY is your IP alias. (If there is alread a line with your IP address in it, edit it to appear as above.)
3
  • For example: 192.168.138.99 Fred localhost
4
  • Save c:\windows\hosts

1
  • Using the text editor of your choice, open the file named "c:\windows\system.ini".
2
  • Add a line to the [386Enh] section that reads: device=c:\modsoft\vsl\jsbdosws.vxd
3
  • Save c:\windows\system.ini
4
  • The installation is complete. Reboot the computer.
