Ask a Question

Why does only the first meter (base address) communicate in the Multi-Circuit Meter (MCM)?

Issue
The user can only read registers, and communicate to the first meter in the MCM

Product Line
Multi Circuit Meter 8364

Environment
Meter installation and communication

Cause
There is a register in the Multi-Circuit Meter (MCM) that must be configured in order to enable the other meters. (By default only the first meter is turned on. )

Resolution
The register can be configured by communicating to the MCM via the RS485 port. Veris has a software package "MNode" that can be used to configure the meter, but any Modbus communication software (such as Square D Modbus Tester) will work to configure register 73.

Modbus Register 73
By setting the following bits to a "1" each meter can be enabled on the MCM, but the first meter is always enabled. When the 6/8 Meter Dip switch is set to the 6 meter mode, then bits 6 and 7 (meters 7 and 8) cannot be enabled.

1 (One) = Enable
0 (Zero) = Disable

bit 0 = Meter 1 (always enabled, always= 1)
bit 1 = Meter 2
bit 2 = Meter 3
bit 3 = Meter 4
bit 4 = Meter 5
bit 5 = Meter 6
bit 6 = Meter 7
bit 7 = Meter 8
bits 8-14 = 0
bit 15 = 0 if only reading from Meter #1
1 if reading from any one of the meters #2-8

Example: Enabling Meters 1,3,5, and 7
Register 73 contains 16 bits, these are numbered 0-15 from right to left (0 at the right up to 15 on the left).
bit 15 - bit 0
0000000001010101 = 85 in decimal format

To Enable meters 1-6 write 63 to register 73
111111=73

So using Modbus tester you would write the decimal value 85 into register 73.
(To enable all 8 meters you would write decimal value 255. )
