Ask a Question

Is it possible to have multiple ION Modbus Slave devices using the Modbus TCP protocol in a Distributed Control System (DCS)?

A distributed control system (DCS) refers to a control system usually of a manufacturing system, process or any kind of dynamic system, in which the controller elements are not central in location (like the brain) but are distributed throughout the system with each component sub-system controlled by one or more controllers.
When using Modbus TCP, ION meters allows the use of a hard coded 100 as the Modbus / Unit ID. Since ION devices do not support changeable Modbus Device IDs when using the Modbus TCP protocol, the software will have to use ID 100 and the IP address nomenclature to identify the device. Some DCS do not allow multiple slave devices to use the same Modbus / Unit ID, therefore it may not be possible to have multiple ION Modbus slave devices on a single Network in a DCS. Please check this with the DCS manufacturer.
