The emergency stop function is used to bring a machine to a safe operating state within the shortest possible time without harm to humans, damage to the machine or environment. Three methods of stopping exist: stop category 0, stop category 1 and stop category 2. These are determined by risk assessment and functional requirements of the machine. The EN ISO 13850 (previous EN 418) specifies the functional requirements and design principles of emergency stop devices.
